Yay!

Just a brief post to say: hurrah for President Obama!

Being that the guy's right of centre by any sane standards, I doubt I'll like everything he does over the next four years. But you know what? I don't care. He appears not to be a lunatic, an incompetent or a bastard, so I'm happy.

Congratulations America.

Comments:
My feelings exactly.

You know what occurs to me? Journalists keep talking about how his speech was grim and forboding and so on because he talked about clouds and storms and the world's economy being totally shafted, but what I don't understand is why we're supposed to be depressed by that. Of course the world's in a bad way, but frankly I'd be far more upset by a new President who didn't talk about that and tried to pretend that everything was fine. I would have no faith in his commitment to actually sorting things out. 'Everything's going beautifully' is not a message of hope when nobody believes it, it's a portent of doom, and I for one found it cheering to hear Obama talk about tackling the problems rather than going 'la la la I can't hear you because the sacred free market is singing my song!'

Yeah. He's not nearly as far to the left as I'd like, but the most important thing about him is he really does seem more interested in facts and working solutions than anything else. I'm so excited I almost cried when I saw him take the oath of office.

"It's time to get up, dust ourselves off, and get to work." That phrase summarizes the address for me. And it's proof, if any were needed, the man can deliver a polite but lethal zinger when he wants.

Verification word: "fencon." I'm just going to leave that one there as an exercise for the reader.

He talks to us like grownups, and always has.

I'm still having difficulty, pinching myself and stuff. It's like deus ex machina.

"subsketh" sounds like either a Lovecraftian minion or a layer of the earth's crust...

I nearly got choked up when I went into the library yesterday. They had an exhibit on the construction and history of the Capitol. And right in the middle of the display case was something new, a large picture: "President Barack Obama." I think I stood for close to five minutes just looking at it with a big silly grin on my face.
